River John
Muriel Unice “Fluff” Baillie was born July 4th, 1935 to Wilson and Myrtle (Dwyer) Langille. After growing up in River John she began teaching in one room schools in the area, including Three Brooks, Seafoam, Melville, and Hedgeville. She was employed at the newly constructed River John Elementary School as a teacher and later, Principal. Fluff retired from education in 1991, learned to play the guitar, and enjoyed several years of camping and travel until being elected Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1999 to represent the people of Pictou West. Four years later, she withdrew from public service and took up new pursuits: golf, curling, and faithful attendance at Pictou County Crushers games. In 2013 she left her beloved property, The Elms, in River John to reside in Pictou and more recently at the Maritime Odd Fellows Home, where she died on September 22nd, 2018. Fluff is survived by her children, Deborah (Al Richman) Baillie, Ottawa; Raymond (Leona) Baillie, River John; Donald (Heather) Baillie, River John; also by grandchildren, Katherine Richman, Halifax; Alexandria Richman, Halifax; Gregory (Lori Levesque) Baillie, Calgary; Christine (Paul) Richardson, Three Brooks; Cory (Jenna) Baillie, Lower Sackville; Erinn (Willem Paynter) Baillie, Halifax; Kaitlyn Baillie, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Tristan Baillie; Myles, Mitchell, and Morgan Richardson; Lochlan Baillie; and one great-great-grandson, Daxton Baillie Butler; siblings, Shirlee Anne Smith, Winnipeg; Irene (Lorne) Harley, Comox; Mel Langille, Mexico; Gaye (Hubert) Hillier, St. John’s; Darrell (Gerald) Sutherland, Caribou River; Roline (Gordon) Brown, Woodstock, Ontario; Terry (Susan) Langille, Botwood, Ontario; sisters and brothers-in-law, Murray Gratto, River John; Anna Baillie, River John; Marguerite (Keith) Robblee, Fox Harbour; Jack Baillie, Port Hastings; Evelyn Baillie, River John; Ronald (Norma) Baillie, River John. Fluff was predeceased by her parents and the love of her life, husband, William “Bill” Baillie; also by siblings, Weldon (Ruby) Langille, Stanley (Betty) Langille, Gwendolyn Gratto, Leota (Alex) MacDonald; sisters-and brothers-in-law, Richard Smith, Reginald Dame, Cathy Langille, James Baillie, Kenneth (Marge) Baillie, Eleanor (Hugh) Sutherland, Janet Baillie, Angus Baillie. Visitation will be held at McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou on Thursday, September 27th from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at Salem United Church, River John, on Friday September 28th at 2:00 PM followed by burial in Mountain Road Cemetery, River John. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salem United Church (Box 190, River John) or the Mountain Road Cemetery (Box 69, River John).
