Gordon and I grew up together and had many special remembrances and times together. I will add three paragraphs from the book of the life of my wife and I that I am working on at present. I think you will enjoy them. My love and sympathy to all of Gordon's family and grandchildren. I grieve with you too.
"We had some great fun times too on the farm. I remember one evening when we were trying to get some calves into the barn one broke away and tried to run around toward the basement of the barn. Gordon ran to stop it, and as the calf was getting past him he grabbed for it and caught it by the tail! Gordon was already running full speed so had little control. The calf curved around toward the basement, going down the slope, with Gordon now taking about ten-foot steps. As the calf curved left Gordon lost his balance, let go of the calf’s tail, and went sailing out over the bank and rolled over and over, stopping just before rolling into the creek! Of course, I just stood and laughed!
The funniest time of all was again by the barn one day when we were driving the cattle into the barn. Grandfather was close to the door, trying to push a young stubborn cow into the barn. For some leverage he decided to reach around behind the cow to grab it by the tail and thus pull it forward. He did this without looking, as he knew where the tail was, and was watching where the cow was headed. Just as he reached behind the cow, it lifted its tail and let go with nice juicy poop—of which grandfather was unfortunate enough to get a handful! Grandpa froze, looked at his hand full of poop, and started to swear like a sailor! Gordon and I literally fell on the ground with laughter—which didn’t help grandfather’s anger at all either! I still laugh easily at the memory!
In winter we went skiing—everywhere. When I was about eight years old my dad made me a pair of skis—about six feet long, and by boiling them in hot water was able to get a pretty good curve on the front! We skied to school, skied home, skied with the Grant boys from “over the hill.” On full moon nights in winter several of us boys would get together and ski on the hills above the Rogers Hill schoolhouse, have hot cocoa drinks at midnight at a friend’s home, then ski in the glorious moonlight, the snow sparkling like a million diamonds until one or two am when we went home. I still remember the enchantment of those wonderful nights! On one of those nights Gordon ran into a stone hidden in the snow and broke off the front ten inches of one ski, while he went end over end in the snow. However, that didn't stop him and he skied with one broken ski for another hour before we went home."

I first remember Gordon from a McLeod family visit in Thunder Bay around 1967. His family was likely in transition to a new military base. My next memories are from childhood visits to Nova Scotia, including the farm. When I moved to Halifax in 1975, my contact with Gordon, the farm in Auchencairn, and all things Scottish, was amplified greatly.
Everyone in our family already knew that Gordon and the farm were of prime importance to my Mum, Marion, who spent many summers on the farm. Her Mum, Muriel, was a MacLeod and Mum named two children after this cousin connection—my brother Gordon, and my own middle name, MacLeod. Gordon was certainly one of her favourite persons of all time.
I grew to appreciate Gordon as he was one of the most welcoming and social persons I have ever known. He was a talented, generous, and loving man. Everyone was encouraged to become part of the family, and learn the history—whether you were interested or not! Thankfully I was interested, and enjoyed being around all of Gordon’s family and the many connections.
In addition to many visits and Clan Gatherings, Sharon and I were fortunate to spend a whole year living on the farm with Gordon. It deepened our connection and we remember it fondly.
Throughout the years Gordon was always so pleased to have any of us drop by and visit. There was always a warm family reception, and the countless treasures in the barn were fun to explore. I'm thankful to have known Gordon and his family, and carry the MacLeod family name.
Sharon and I will miss him. You and your family are in our hearts and in our prayers.
Cousin Vern & Sharon Vickruck

We fondly remember Gord & Kathy and the great times we had with them and their children in Baden Soellingen during the 1960s. Although a close knit group we were posted far afield after Germany I saw Gord only once or twice after. It was a time of memories that have lasted a lifetime. Rest in Peace Gord, you will be remembered.

We are so sad to hear of Gordon’s passing. We had lost touch over the years but still have the memories of our good friend. We served with Gord in Germany and joined him on some of his travels. We will remember his kindness, sense of humour and his professionalism as an airman. Our sympathy to his family. He was truly a great Scot.

To the MacLeod Family:we were saddened to learn today of Gordon's recent passing. The MacLeod Clan has lost one of its most active and energetic members who "Held Fast" to his Scottish Roots and Heritage in 'Remembering those he Came From".He was a fine Pictou County citizen who involved himself in all activities in the community, political and otherwise. He will be long remembered and missed by all those whose lives he touched-and there were many!It was an honor and a privelege to have known him and for his loyal and unfailing support over the years.
I send along sincere sympathy and condolences to all the MacLeod family.A bagpipe lament 'Flowers of the Forrest' goes out to his cherished memory."Hold Fast"!
Sincerely,
