Obituary of Leona Bertha Smith
Leona Bertha Smith (nee Hiltz)
Pictou
It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, with family by her side on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the age of 88 in the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou. Reunited once again, she went to join our father, Raymond Smith, her husband of over 50 years, who predeceased her July 28, 2000. Left to mourn are their children, Allister (Carol), Russell (Hilda), Bertha (Alan), Barbara (Bob), Edward, Brenda (Sherry) and Brandy (Stephane); grandchildren, Julie Moser, Todd Smith, Russell Smith, Rhoda Brannen, April Fortune, Raymond Langille, Amie Smith, Megan Smith, Mason Smith, and Delaney Smith; several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Russell (Judy) Hiltz, Lyons Brook; and sisters, Esther Barkhouse, Lyons Brook; Elsie Bowron, Ontario; Mable Dorey, Glen Haven Manor. She was predeceased by brothers, Carmen Hiltz and Basil (Olive) Hiltz, and her grandson, Travis Smith. Leona was the daughter of the late Wesley and Willow (nee Langille) Hiltz originally of Cape John. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Leona was a homemaker for over 50 years in the family home at the Gut Bridge, taking care of her own large immediate family as well as many extended family members and close friends. Her door was always open to all who came to visit. Leona liked her knitting and loved her cats and dogs that she often took as strays. She enjoyed her time in Ottawa, Alberta and BC when visiting some of her children and grandchildren. In recent years she lived at the Shiretown Nursing Home and spent her time visiting with her good friends and family where she always requested just 15 more minutes. The family sincerely thanks the staff of the Shiretown Nursing Home for their compassion and care. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be at McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou on Tuesday June 18th from 6-9 pm. The service will take place from St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, on Wednesday June 19th at 11am, with Rev. Darlene Jewers officiating. Burial to follow in Seaview Cemetery. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
