Obituary of Gary Kipling MacKenzie

With heavy hearts the family of Gary Kipling MacKenzie, announce his passing. Gary passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 18th 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, at the age of 68.  He was born July 23rd 1950 in Pictou to Kathleen Langille and the late George Kipling MacKenzie.  Gary was predeceased by his wife Agnes “Aggie” Isabel Hooper, who passed in 2003.  He is survived by daughters, Shelley MacKenzie, Cowichan Bay, British Columbia and Crystal (Chris) Leduc, Pictou; grandsons, Justin and Matthew Leduc; siblings, Michael (Gail), Donna, Ricky (Helen), Mary Anne (Wayne), Scott (Suzanne); sisters-in-law, Cindy (Gary) Hooper and Jennie Stevenson.  Gary will also be missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Along with his wife, Aggie, and father, George, Gary was also predeceased by his siblings, Barry and Heather; father-in-law, Teddy Hooper; mother-in-law, Margaret Hooper; brothers-in-law, Eric Stevenson and Wayne Langille.  During his life Gary was in the militia, and served in Germany during peacetime following WWII.  He worked as a fisherman, then as a pipefitter for many years until he retired.  Gary was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pictou.  He enjoyed attending services every Sunday and looked forward to Sunday dinners afterward with his mother.  Gary was endlessly devoted to his loving family and friends.  He loved hosting family barbeques and get-togethers.  In his free time, Gary loved sailing, skiing, being among friends at Harbour Light Campground, spending time with his beloved grandsons, and deep-sea fishing on the west coast with his daughter Shelley.  As a member of the IOOF Gary proudly held the title of Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of the Atlantic Provinces as well past District Deputy Grand Master of District#17 and Past Noble Grand.  He enjoyed spending time forging friendships and helping others.  We would like to thank his Lodge brothers for their support and friendship to our Dad.  We would like to thank Doctor Ohson, Doctor Kwasnik, the Aberdeen Palliative Care Team, and the VON, who went above and beyond in providing care and comfort.  Visitation will be 6-9 PM Monday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou.  Funeral will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday from the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Rev. Shelly Chandler officiating.  Burial will follow in Seaview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.  www.mclarenfuneral.ca
