Cecil “Aulden” Sutherland -78, of Lyons Brook, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 31, 2017 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. He was born at the family home in Caribou River on May 18, 1939, a son of the late Austin and Doris (Hansford) Sutherland. Auldie worked hard all his life. He worked in the woods and spent some time working in Ontario, but his ambition was to come home to Nova Scotia and to own a gravel truck. He fulfilled his dream by owning several gravel trucks and running a successful gravel business. In the winter months he worked for the Department of Highways operating a salt truck and as a dispatcher. After many years of hard work he found an opportunity for pleasure with his love of camping, attending many bluegrass festivals, NASCAR races and local campouts with friends. His camping trips allowed him to spend time with friends and to have many laughs. At the age of fifty he purchased his first fiddle and over the next few years he taught himself to play. He enjoyed many hours of fiddling with friends and family and The Toney River Fiddlers, later entertaining at many nursing homes and at the old time dances in West Branch with his friends, the MacKinnons, Alvin and Marilyn. Auldie was most proud of his family. The family shared many trips together camping and traveling south to Florida and to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He also passed on his love of music to his family. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 52 years, Florence (MacAulay); daughter, Darlene and son-in-law, Randy Gilby; granddaughters, Carley and Cecely; brothers, Gerald (Darrell), Caribou River, Larry (Mary Louise), Caribou River; sisters, Phyllis Lewis (Dave) Acton, Ontario; Diane Demone (Lormer), Acton, Ontario; sisters-in-law, Jessie Casey, Pictou and Ellen Fanning, New Glasgow; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Amel and Ricky; and sister, Betty MacArthur. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 PM Wednesday January 3rd in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will be 11AM on Thursday January 4th from Lyons Brook United Church. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, Cariboo River Upper Cemetery or the Lyons Brook United Church. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
