It is with grieving hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunty and friend, Mary Ethel Whalen of Abercrombie, Nova Scotia, on Friday March 5, 2021, at the age of 88. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Philip and Eugenie Nearing. She was predeceased by brothers, Sheldon, Russel and Philip, and sister, Charlotte. She is survived by brother, Patrick, and sisters, Sheila, Sharon, Marion, Laura and Viola. She was a loving and devoted wife to predeceased husband of 65 years, Joseph Ernest Whalen, and a loving and devoted mother to five children, Mitchell, David, Karen, Nancy and Marc; as well as to grandchildren, Keegan, Nicholas, Erin, Evan, Coleman and Catriona, and great-grandchildren, Daniel, Robie, August, Lilly, Thomas, Gemma and Jason. She loved to travel and experience new things. She enjoyed long walks on the beach, listening to music and dancing. She was an active bridge player in the Pictou community and shared many hours together laughing at Seinfeld episodes. She will be greatly missed by us all. There will be no memorial service at this time, family will gather to celebrate her life.
