Obituary of George Gordon Bedford

George Gordon Bedford (March 8, 1926 – March 10, 2018), 92 years on this earth was just enough and 34 days without the love of his life, Shorty, was simply too much.  George Gordon Bedford passed away peacefully at home March 10, 2018, overlooking his Town of Pictou, with the same determination that defined every aspect of his sterling character and his life.  Outwardly known to many simply as ‘Chief’ and undeniably committed and loyal to the responsibilities entailed in service to his community, he more proudly responded to ‘Dad’ and in later years, ‘Grampie George’, more staunchly embracing the love of family with each passing day.  Born March 8, 1926 to Louis and Edith Bedford, himself an only child, he rarely strayed far from his birthplace, in care of his family and community.  As a young man, he entered the Pictou Fire Department where he remained active for more than 50 years, his last 44 years, as Fire Chief.  This was an around the clock calling, more than a vocation, filled with countless acts of ‘silent service’.  He was a Justice of the Peace; built a successful business, literally from the ground up; raised a family; and, found assurance and remained true to his Christian beliefs.  His solitude was found on the shores of Waterside, for him, the most beautiful place on earth.  He will be remembered for his Christmas spirit, leading the members of the PFD to gift bags of fruit and candy bars to young and old alike; he was Santa for residents of the Oddfellows Home on Christmas morning; and, far more quietly and anonymously, he was a Secret Santa who ensured many others in need also had a Merry Christmas.  Those closest to George were rewarded by his insight and wisdom and a memorable story from his past.  Indeed, he was, a storyteller extraordinaire!  He would recount highlights from his days playing basketball for Pictou Academy and his proficiency with the layup shot; his canteen at the Old Exhibition and the aroma of his famous hamburgers; colourful visits from those who spent a night at Bedford’s Motel, where he coined the “We Sell Sleep”; his many battles in the uniform of the PFD including his day addressing the Provincial Legislature on the perils of municipal amalgamation; and, his overwhelming pride for his family.  George is preceded by his Shorty (Shirley) and survived by his son, Lewis (Lisa) and granddaughters, Addisyn and Isabelle.  Cremation will be overseen by McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou.  The family is grateful for condolences; however, declines flowers and donations.  In lieu of visitation, a private service will be held at a future date. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
