CAPON, Alexandra J. ‘Sandy’ Pictou / Halifax CAPON, Alexandra Joan ‘Sandy’ of Pictou and formerly of Halifax passed away peacefully Friday April 15, 2022. Born in 1943 in Seaham, U.K. to the late Llew and Joan Stead, Sandy crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary in 1946 with her mother arriving at Pier 21 and grew up in Halifax. While working at the Halifax Herald, Sandy met Rick and they married in 1966. Sandy and Rick chose Halifax to raise their family. She was actively involved with her children’s activities and volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. When her children were older, Sandy worked for Sears Canada. In 2001, Sandy and Rick decided to retire to Pictou after spending many special summers in Caribou River. Sandy was involved in her church and community and enjoyed rug hooking, bowling and walking along the Jitney Trail. Ten years ago, Sandy suffered a series of strokes and for the last five years she has resided at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche where she received wonderful care for which the family will always be grateful. A devoted mother and grandmother, Sandy’s proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren. Our lives have been enriched by her love, guidance and support. Throughout her life, she made friends very easily and was fortunate to have many special friendships. Sandy is survived by her husband, Rick; daughter, Sarah Veinot (Gordie); son, Stephen (Jennifer); grandchildren, William, Thomas, Olivia and Abigail; sister, Kay Sperdakes; brother, Gordon Stead (Debbie); sister-in-law, Dawn Francis and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to Willow Lodge.
