MacDONALD, R. Kevin ‘Dougal’ Pictou / Pictou Island It is with heavy hearts the family of Roger Kevin "Dougal" MacDonald announce his sudden passing on December 23, 2022 at the QEII Health Sciences Center in Halifax. Kevin was born to Keith and the late Doris MacDonald on September 28, 1960, in Pictou. Kevin grew up and spent much of his life on Pictou Island. He would leave the Island in the early seventies after the Island's schoolhouse closed but would return every summer. He fished lobster with many fellow Islanders from the age of eighteen, sometimes joining in at herring time as well. He was a staple at Pictou Island's wharf for many years. Watching boats come in and giving a wave or offering a drive up the road. If he wasn't at the wharf, you could find him combing the beaches or visiting with friends and enjoying a cup of coffee. Kevin was a devoted sports fan. Football, hockey and baseball were some of his favourites; he had a knack for remembering sports statistics and trivia. He had a strong allegiance to the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays, perhaps inherited from his parents. Kevin was an avid dart player for many years in both Island and Pictou Legion leagues. More recently, he enjoyed the card games and get-togethers at Strathcona Place, a community he was proud to be a part of. Kevin shared the family's love of cats. He was fortunate to care for his own furry friend, Joshie, over the past few years, keeping each other company. Above all, Kevin shared his mother’s kind heart. If anyone needed help with anything, you could count on him to be there. Although quiet by nature, his smile and laugh could light up a room and if you were lucky, you might get to share a joke or hear one of his quick quips. Kevin's sudden passing is a reminder to us all to live each day to the fullest and lead a life with the same kind heart as he did. He is survived by his father, Keith; sisters, Myrna (Andrew) LeBlanc and Ruby (Stephen) MacDonald; nieces, Anna (Casey) LeBlanc and Kristen (Thomas) and Claire Ross; and uncle, Ron (Jane) MacDonald. He will also be missed by his dear friend, Anita LeBlanc. Besides his mother, he is predeceased by his uncle, Alfred MacLean. His remains are resting at McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Visitation will be from 6-8pm on December 29, 2022. His funeral will take place at 1pm, Friday, December 30, 2022, at McLaren Funeral Home with Jacquie Ross officiating. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory maybe made to the QEII Health Foundation or ca-r-ma.org (Cat Rescue Maritime) - Antigonish Chapter.
