Obituary of Richard Henry Porter

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
PORTER, Richard Henry Bayview It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Grampie, Great-Grampie, Brother, Uncle and Friend. Richard passed at the Aberdeen Hospital October 24, 2023 after a brief illness. Born to Kenneth and Violet (Scott) Porter. Richard spent his childhood working on the family farm and creating as much mischief as he could get away with. Much to the dismay of his brother, Murray and sister, Janice. This is where his value for hard work began. At an early age Richard took a keen interest in operating a bulldozer. In his early twenties he and Cindy (mother of his four children) ventured to Fort McMurray from Pictou, leaving on foot and hitchhiking across the country. Once in Fort McMurray, Richard made a career working in the oil sands operating a bull dozer. He made a life there and started a family in Alberta until they moved back to Nova Scotia in 1988. This work often took Richard away from his greatest love, his family and children and eventually grandchildren. An avid cook, no one went hungry at Dad's whether it was a family dinner or a barbeque. His barbeque skills were second to none. The grandkids dubbed his huge burgers the Grampie Burger. It became infamous in the Porter family! He loved nothing more than having all his kids and grandkids over for a meal at his house. He was so proud of his property and the ancestral family farm and held this land close to his heart. He was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Porter (Irene) and mother, Violet (Scott) Porter; cousins, Jimmy and Burton Langille. Richard is survived by his four children, Melissa (Jason Aitken), Bayview; JR (Sarah), Pictou; Jessica (Terry Reid), Scotsburn and Dylan (Paula), Edmonton; nine grandchildren, Alexander (Biancia), Adrienne (Baillie), Larry, Levi, Layla, Hudson, Violet, Denver, Sylvie and newest addition great-grandson, Clayton; brother, Murray (Barb); sister, Janice; niece, Marla and nephews, Matthew, Adam and Jonathon. Visitation will be Sunday October 29th from 4-6 PM in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral Service will take place Monday October 30th at 11 AM in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou with Pastor Pat Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Seaview Cemetery with a luncheon following at Pictou Legion Branch 16. Special thanks to Kathy for all her special visits with Dad and the Palliative Care Team at the Aberdeen Hospital. Donations may be made in his memory to IWK Children’s Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, or a charity of your choice. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
