I just learnt of the death of Ernie . I first met Ernie when he was employed at the Advocate office on George St in Pictou. I was a young fellow working in the
Advertising Dept at Sobeys and made numerous trips to the Advocate to oversee the production of the Sobeys Ad layouts for the numerous newspapers across the maritimes.
Ernie would be in the composing room along with Pete,Dick and Lennie Van Veen. He was calm and collected in a business that was ruled by deadlines and “zero” tolerance for
mistakes.
As Eastern Sign-Print president Miller Tibbetts was formulating his plans to grow his companies business,at the time located in the former Sobeys #1 in downtown Stellarton,he
reached out to me on who could he persuade to join his staff….Ernie came to mind. A small darkroom was set up in the old meat cooler on site and Ernie started doing his magic
with producing negative, positives,PMTs and metal plates.. Prior to that ESP used paper plates electro-statically produced for offset printing.
In 1979 the new plant was built on the former Allan Shaft property and modern composing ,darkroom equipment and printing presses were in place. It was the time of cut and
paste, copy would be typeset as raw text and the layout staff would apply wax to the back of the composed text .Line by line the type would be applied to ruled layout
sheets, hyphens would be added were word breaks were needed. In the early 80’s I would become General Manager of ESP and relied on Ernie's offset print experience in many
decisions that were made.
Some of the first staff working Prepress included Shirley Phalen,Shelia MacKay,Donna Robertson,Linda Crowe,Connie MacKenzie plus many others.(I know I missed a bunch
of names) Ernie got along well with his “girls”. He was patient ,he took the time to explain and teach. He taught me and many others a lot of the “tricks of the trade”.
I’m sad to hear that he’s gone but happy to have known him. On behalf of all former Eastern Sign-Print staff that worked with Ernie over the years our condolences go out to his
wife Hazel and family.
