MacKENZIE, George T.
Truro / Dartmouth
MacKenzie, George Thomas - Born on August 8, 1948, to the late William Thomas and Alice Mae (Ozon) MacKenzie, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. George was strong and empathetic, living life with integrity and honesty, standing on his morals and principles. George had a large personality, quick wit, goofy charm and big laugh. An excellent athlete, George paddled for Lake Banook Canoe Club, was an avid golfer, and played football and hockey, often telling stories how he played for 6 teams and would get changed in the car on the way to the next rink. George graduated from Dalhouse in 1971 with a Bachelor of Physical Education, playing both football and hockey. A lifelong educator, George went on to teach in the Halifax School system for over 30 years. He had a passion for education, teaching and coaching - believing sports, and the camaraderie that accompanied, was a gift and way to keep children safe. He created a 'Saturday Morning Sports' program, held adult golf lessons and was quick to lend a hand, or an ear, to anyone that asked. George loved nothing more than spending time with his children, William and Robert. He was always there for them, cheering them on at sporting events, throwing unlimited batting practice and providing advice. He enjoyed his summers spent at Keji and is a self proclaimed 'Master Tarpologist'. He was heavily involved in the Dartmouth District Baseball program and also Brightwood Golf and country club, for which he was a member for over 40 years. In his retirement he enjoyed time with his family and grandchildren and loved attending the many sporting events that followed. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 51 years, Barbara (West); sons, William (Angela) and Robert (Amanda); grandchildren, Kayla, Maddux, Hayden, Knoll, Palmer and Jack. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, MS Society or Children’s Wish Foundation. Among all of the many quotes he was known for, below is most fitting on a life well lived:
'When the one great scorer comes to mark against your name, he notes not whether you've won or lost, but how you've played the game'.
'RIP, Granddad - Love you'
