Obituary of John Sherman Knight
KNIGHT, John Sherman - age 91, passed away September 1, 2018 in Halifax. John was born in Oxford on April 17, 1927 and was the youngest son of the late Charles Clayton and Bessie May (Mattinson) Knight. He was a born teacher and taught Industrial Arts in Pictou for 35 years, and also an inspector for U.L.C. John was the coordinator of Adult Education for Pictou for over 20 years and served as president of the Dunromin Housing Co-Op, the first housing Co-Op in Pictou. This is where he built his home in 1962 and where he lived for over 55 years. He was always active in Pictou United Church where he served as an elder, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. John was a gifted woodworker and carver, who always had several projects on the go and always plans for many more. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Marguerite Langille; sisters, Euda, Etta, Elsie and Jean; brother, Harry and granddaughter, Laurel Lea Knight. He is survived by sons, John (Madge), Geraldine, New Zealand; Sherman (Cindy), McLellans Brook; daughter, Elaine (Alan) Gray, Fall River; grandchildren, Shane (Lisa), Kris (Sophie), Daniel (Katrina), Trevor (Kari) and Taliah; great-grandchildren, Teghan, Sam, Jacob, Benjamin, Chloe, Maxine and Emmett and numerous nieces and nephews. John will be greatly missed by all of his family, but finally at peace with the love of his life Marguerite. Many thanks to his long time Dr. and friend Randy Burrill also, the wonderful staff at Parkstone (Evan Hall) Halifax, for John’s care. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8PM Tuesday, September 11th in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will be 11AM Wednesday, September 12th in Pictou United Church with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarty officiating. Reception will follow the service in the church hall, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Wallace River. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Pictou United Church, Riverside Cemetery, Wallace River or a charity of your choice.
