Doris Eleanor Young (nee MacKay), age 97, died Monday, September 2, 2019, in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Born in Pictou, on July 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Harriet “Hattie” MacKay. She is survived by her son, Gordon Young (Carol) of Pictou; daughter, Joan Young-Maltby (Allan), Woodburn; grandchildren, Luke (Michelle), Caroline, Mark (Shari), Jane, Peter (Kari), Robert (Janine), Sarah (Matt), Rebekah, Matthew (Sarah Jane), and Jacob (Lauren). She is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nephew David Young (Ruby) and her sister-in-law, Barb and her family, Michael (Dianne), Ann (James) and Miller, Joan (Rodney); and several cousins. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Clarence; son, Robert; brothers, Harold and Thomas, cousin, George Bedford (Shirley). Doris, affectionately known as Mum, Grammy Doris, Great Grammy Doris, was very active in her community, including Pictou Historical Photographic Society, and many other agencies. She was named Volunteer of the Year for Pictou for her commitment to the community. Her church and her religion were very important to her. She was a choir member for many years, and an Elder of the church, and a CGIT leader (which she loved). She had many interests/hobbies/gifts- oil painting, rug hooking, skating but her most satisfying activity was being with her family and loving her family, both at her home and at her beloved cottage at Seacrest. Her family loved her right back. We celebrate her ability to engage and connect with those she came in contact with. We also celebrate her fudge and lemon tarts. Funeral arrangements are with the McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou, where visitation will be held Thursday September 5th, 7-9pm and Friday September 6th, 2-4 and 7-9pm. The funeral will be Saturday September 7th at 2pm, with Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating at the Pictou United Church. Thanks to the Newfoundland ladies: Irene, Bernadine, and Kathy. Thank you also to the caring Shiretown staff and the Palliative Care Unit staff of the Aberdeen Hospital. Donations in her memory may be made to the deCoste Performing Arts Centre or to the Pictou United Church. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
