Nan, I am so fortunate to have had you as my grandmother. You helped raise me to be the person I am today. You were always there when I needed you growing up, whether it was someone to be on my side or somewhere to spend time, often sharing our love for sweets together. You always kept a special treat for me in the cupboard. My sisters and I looked forward to spending time at your house filling up our quarter coin collections, watching game shows and playing. You loved us unconditionally and memories of your thoughtfulness, smile and sense of humour will stay with me forever!

My earliest memory is of Nan. She had come to visit and I was running alongside the driver door as she left because I didn’t want her to leave. She drove slowly and smiled and laughed at me as she slowly pulled away.
I will miss Nan. I will miss her hugs. I will miss her smiles. I will miss our talks.
Love you, Dolly.
Jody

Nan was always a big part of our lives. She never missed a birthday, holiday, or special event to celebrate with us. I will always remember spending time at her house, being introduced to game shows like price is right, wheel of fortune and jeopardy. She always had a love for babies and dogs— she probably loved Keisha the most of all of us. We would often bake pies when I was little, I remember helping peel apples for one of her delicious apple pies, but my favorite that she would always have for me at Christmas (or just randomly dropped off at home) was her blueberry pie. She was always there to take of us when needed and we always knew she was just a phone call or short bike ride away! I am glad you hung around love enough to hear of your newest great grandson, Grayson Thomas MacDonald. I know you would have loved him deeply and given him all the snuggles if you could.

Nan’s ability to cook was truly something special—she could create almost anything, and her apple and bumbleberry pie was a taste that everyone who had the privilege of enjoying it will never forget. Her kitchen was a place where love was baked into every dish.
The cousins fondly recall the annual strawberry season, when we would eagerly rush to Nan’s house on our bikes for lunch. Whatever was prepared, we devoured it in minutes, fueling ourselves before heading out to pick for the afternoon. Every day, we would try to convince Nan to come pick with us, knowing that no one could fill those strawberry boxes faster than she could. Parker’s must have loved seeing her show up—no one was quicker or more efficient than Nan when it came to picking those perfect strawberries.
Jody remembers well the day they were in Ontario with Nan and they were out for supper. Nan loved fish and chips and often ordered it. This occasion was no different, but when it came Jody quickly realized something was wrong with Nan’s fish. But she just ate it quietly until the waitress asked her how her meal was, she had no filter and replied “Not very good”. Lesson learned: don't get fish outside of NS. There was always action in the farm house between cousins, community kids and animals. But it was full of love and the best homemade food ever to be eaten in our lives.
As Nan retired and stepped into helping raise the Waller girls, Nan was often found sitting at the top of the stairs each morning waiting for us to wake up to get us off to school or watch some Saturday morning comics. She always had a secret stash of chocolate bars for Reanne and her peanut butter toast could not be matched. Even though Nan was a hard working farm lady, she always was done up. She loved her nails and hair being done, her collection of necklaces, rings and earring were always sparkling. She has an amazing collection of Sworski crystals and her spoon collection has to be one of the best thanks Jody for helping her with that.
Every weekday at noon, we knew the routine: if we were home from school, it was time for Price is Right. We’d quiet down so she could hear every bid and laugh along with the excitement of the game. Those moments were small but special, as Nan's enjoyment of the show was contagious, bringing the family together in a simple, joyful way. And in the evenings, it was time for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy—two shows Nan never missed. She’d share her thoughts, answer questions with a smile, and remind us of the things that made life fun.
Nan had a passion for playing cards—particularly 45’s —became a cherished family tradition. Whether we were laughing over a competitive hand or simply enjoying each other's company, those card games brought us closer together. Nan was a woman whose heart overflowed with love—for her family, for animals, and especially cats and Keisha. She loved music, attending the Tattoo often and she had a special love of George Canyons music. She had a way of making everyone feel special, and her love for the little things in life created moments that we will cherish forever.
Her magical hugs were felt by so many, I know the MacPhail girls loved coming home to get nans hugs. We know she will be playing Price of Right tomorrow with Bob Barker and she will embrace those around her. We are now going to send off with one of Nan’s favorite songs, A Good day to Ride

Mother and father had cows on the farm and milked them by hand. They carried water from an outdoor pump to the watershed. They shared the chores from milking cows to growing strawberry plants. Mother was always a hard worker and one of her greatest feats was strawberry picking contest competitions. She prevailed victorious with 300 boxes a day, a record that I believe still stands. Mother worked at the homestead restaurant for 15 years before retirement. Her retirement was not typical as she turned into a fulltime nanny for the Waller girls. There was never a homeless child in Durham as all the stray children would end up staying at mother’s. Her greatest joy was feeding all of the children who were not allowed to leave the table until their plates were clean. She taught us the importance of family, hard work, and compassion.
Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit lives on in our hearts. We will carry her love with us always and strive to honor her legacy in our daily lives.
Thank you, Mother, for everything. You are deeply missed and forever loved.

We are here today to celebrate the life of an extraordinary woman, Nan Dorothy (Dolly). As many of us knew her as the queen of quick wit, legendary stories, and the world’s best pies. Nan had a way of making every moment brighter whether she was telling us stories from the good old days or sneaking us extra dessert. She had a sparkle in her eye that made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She taught us so much, such as how to stand tall during tough times, laugh at ourselves and how to stretch a dollar like it was a superpower. Today we are not just mourning her loss we are celebrating her incredible spirit, humor and all the love and laughs she brought into our lives. Let’s remember her with the joy she would want us to feel.
Nan was one of the most loving and caring people. She instilled her values and kindness in everyone that she nurtured.

My deepest condolences to the Waller family at this sad time. Dorothy (Dolly) Waller was my 'other' mother. Her cheerful disposition, hearty laugh, and welcoming manner when I was a kid made life much easier for me when times were tough at home. Thelma and I spent many crazy hours with Shirley at her place, going over magazines, planning our futures, trying hairstyles (OMG - they cut my hair so short I thought I would never get over the shame!) and all the stuff that teenagers go through. Nothing bothered Dolly, she laughed it off, and always had something nice to say and she and Johnny were always so welcoming. I can still hear her.
I've moved around a lot over the years, but always made a point of stopping to see Dolly whenever I went through Durham. I do regret that I did not make more of an effort to visit her the last couple of years. She was the loveliest person and I so appreciate her kindness to me when I so needed it. May she rest in peace. Thank you, Dorothy. I love you.
